Overview

The first stop will be Lanyang Museum, one of Yilan’s most iconic modern landmarks. Yilan’s unique architecture of the Lanyang Museum is inspired by the shape of a cuesta, a landform unique to Taiwan’s Northeast Coast. This design was chosen for its symbolic representation of a place in which humans and nature can coexist.

After Lanyang Museum, we will travel to Tangweigou Hot Spring Park in Jiaoxi. The beneficial properties of this slightly alkaline sodium bicarbonate spring have earned it the name “Spring of the Beauties”. The colorless and odorless water here leaves the skin feeling smooth and elastic after a bath. Enjoy the comfort and soothing feeling of taking a foot bath in these beneficial hot spring waters.

Lunch will be arranged by the local bed and breakfast—Loherb Villa. Located in the middle of the paddy field, this getaway provides healthy and tasty meals cooked with locally sourced ingredients. While dining here, take in the beautiful scenery of Lanyang Plain and enjoy an authentic taste of the local delicacies.

Yilan’s annual Green Expo is one of the county’s flagship agritourism events. The Expo combines exhibitions, artistic performances, and horticultural displays along with other attractions, to promote green living, conservation and eco-friendly agriculture, while capitalizing on Yilan’s bountiful natural landscapes.

The day will end with a memorable stop at the National Center for Traditional Arts, a large complex built in the style of Taiwan’s historic old streets. The Center is like one of Taiwan’s historic old streets but also benefits from scheduled folk performances, DIY workshops, and many stores specializing in Taiwan’s various folk crafts. The area is also filled with delicious eateries and coffee shops!

Description

Meet your tour guide and driver at the hotel lobby, and then head off to Yilan County.

The tour begins with a quick trip through the 13-kilometer long Hsuehshan Tunnel, which shortens the commute from Taipei to Yilan to under one hour. Emerging from the tunnel, you’re greeted with a view of the endless rice fields of the Lanyang Plain, one of Yilan’s most iconic landscapes.

Soon, you will arrive at the Lanyang Museum, a unique museum dedicated to local culture and history that has been built in the shape of a cuesta, a unique coastal landform that is common on Taiwan’s Northern Coast. The museum’s architecture is a monument to the possibility of coexistence between humans and nature.

Inside the Lanyang Museum, each floor of the permanent exhibition showcases one area of Yilan’s unique topography, including the Mountains, the Plains, and the Sea. The area also features a Time Gallery. At the Lanyang Museum, you will learn about Yilan’s unique local ecology, geography and cultural history.

After you finish touring the museum, head off to Jiaoxi, Northern Taiwan’s top destination for hot spring bathing. The colorless and odorless water of this alkaline sodium bicarbonate spring leaves the skin smooth and silky. And, the phenols dissolved in the water also have beneficial effects for our digestive systems. Our tour will stop at the Tangweigou Hot Spring Park for a public foot bath. The water at these springs is hot enough that even a foot bath will have you feeling warm and energized. The park offers many foot bathing pools, a Chinese garden, and several pavilions, and is suitable for friends and family to enjoy together.

After warming up at the hot spring, we will head to the boutique bed and breakfast, Loherb Villa, where we will eat a locally sourced lunch.

Loherb Villa

Loherb Villa is a locally operated and eco-friendly dining and lodging space. The structure makes use of green building and ecological engineering principles and features transparent curtain walls, which allow visitors to enjoy the beauty of Yilan regardless of the season. Lunch will be served with carefully selected seasonal ingredients—the veggies are homegrown and pesticide-free. After lunch, take a tour through the vegetable patch next to the restaurant and see the land that just fed you.

Today’s main attraction is our afternoon stop at the Yilan Green Expo. Founded in the year 2000, the Yilan Green Expo is one of the county’s flagship agritourism events. The Expo combines exhibitions, artistic performances, and horticultural displays along with other attractions to promote green living, conservation and eco-friendly agriculture, while capitalizing on Yilan’s bountiful natural landscapes.

Dongshan River Water Park, where the Green Expo will be located this year, is a beautiful location which showcases Yilan’s simple and lush landscape.

The tour will then wind up with a visit to Yilan’s famous National Center for Traditional Arts. This culture park is built in the style of Taiwan’s many “old streets”, except that the heritage architecture here is home to workshops with a particular focus on the traditional arts, including puppetry, the folk arts, and paper-oil-umbrella making.

A walk through the park is like a trip through time to Taiwan’s prosperous early days. After visiting the National Center of Traditional Arts, your tour guide will escort you back to your hotel in Taipei.
