YINGGE CERAMICS MUSEUM
The Yingge Ceramics Museum, dedicated to research, education, and promotion of the ceramic industry, is the first of its kind in Taiwan. Displayed works range from prehistoric artifacts from Taiwan, to works from Yingge’s own ceramic industry, to examples of advanced applications in modern technology.
Yingge has been the pottery capital of Taiwan for nearly 200 years. A pillar of Yingge’s economy, local ceramic production successfully evolved with the economic environment, and today, the historic district is populated with art studios and boutiques. At the Yingge Ceramics Museum, there are four permanent exhibitions—each featuring interactive elements, different objects and mediums—to educate visitors on the history of the ceramic industry in Yingge’s development, and its significance in local culture.
The museum has taken a global approach to promoting and reinvigorating Yingge’s local ceramics industry. The museum’s international artist-in-residence program drives exchange and collaboration on ceramics research and studies. This, in turn, injects new artistry and creativity, and the resulting hand-crafted pieces are branded as the “Yingge Wares Project”. To expand local visibility, ceramics competitions are held regularly, and serve as a platform for exchanging ideas between international and local artists. These competitions, like the Taiwan Ceramics Biennale, bring focus to the aesthetic and philosophical dimensions of ceramics and its role in civilization.
The International Coffee Cup Competition, on the other hand, emphasizes the practical. Hence, a coffee cup, as an essential object of leisure in daily life, is the subject of the competition. All of the selected pieces are available for viewing through their digital ceramics museum.
With 3,500 ceramic pieces and a growing collection, Yingge Ceramics Museum is a leader in forging a bright path for ceramics appreciation. Enjoy the curated yet down to earth exhibits at the museum, take a walk to the Yingge Old Street right around the corner, and explore the fun treasure hunt of the pieces of your dream!
