Central Taiwan

With high mountains, temples, puppetry, hot springs, and cycling, Central Taiwan has something for everyone.

Central Taiwan is the land of temples, high mountain recreation areas, dramatic landscapes, and puppet theater—and it also produces some of Taiwan’s most delicious fruits! Taichung, Taiwan’s third largest city, has world-class fine dining, massive night markets, and historic temples, including Dajia Jenn Lann Temple which is famous for being the starting point of the annual 9-day Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage that draws over 1 million believers. Farther inland, Nantou, the island’s only land-locked county, features high-mountain farms, picturesque mountain-side lodging, the world-famous Sun Moon Lake, and excellent cycling opportunities. In Changhua and Yunlin, you might start to question if there are more temples than houses. Be sure to check out Taiwan’s most original old streets, the famous temples of Lukang Township, and Yunlin’s puppetry museums.
